dear lovely customers

Monday, 4 January 2016

I’m sad to bring you news that Cushion & Cake will not be reopening this January. You may be aware that I had a baby in October 2015 and since taking time away from the tearoom, business has been very tough and was no longer sustainable. Cushion & Cake needs me full time and unfortunately, at the moment, I am fully committed to taking care of my son.

I have had such a lovely time serving you tea and cake over the last four and a half years. We’ve had fun at Crafternoons, at our Tea Dance and remember the two times the reindeer visited the tearoom? Many of you have become friends over the years and I would like to thank you for all your love and support.

Take care and I hope to see you sometime soon.

menu illustrations in the tearoom

We’re settling in nicely to our new home on Hyndland Street. I’m particularly enjoying the hustle and bustle of the area and we’ve already met lots of new customers as well as welcoming our lovely, loyal customers from Old Dumbarton Road.

The change in location allowed us to launch a fresh new look for the tearoom and these included our new menus. We commissioned a fabulous illustrator, Cat Ingall to come up with some exciting designs to depict our food on our new menus.

She came up with such lovely illustrations which were perfectly suited to the tearoom. I’ll tell you a little bit about the process as it was not as straightforward as simple illustration.

Firstly Cat visited the tearoom with her camera and asked me to pick some of my favourite china in the tearoom and other decorative items in the tearoom in addition to food and drinks. Cat photographed these items then took them home to draw them with pen. Then she free sewed the illustrations on her sewing machine before scanning into her computer and adding water colour digitally. The process really adds up to make something special.

goodbye Old Dumbarton Road

Saturday, 8 August 2015

I’m a bit emotional today, our last day trading on Old Dumbarton Road before our move to Hyndland Street next week. I’ll miss my lovely neighbours on the street, Cheryl from Duke’s Bar, Jo of Chou Chou Chateau, Belinda & Raj at Premier, the McMillans at A&M Fish but particularly Walid from the Yorkhill Barbers who has looked after and supported us for over four years. Thanks also to our lovely customers too who have promised to come with us to Hyndland Street (I’ll save a seat for you).

We’ve had a lot of fun on the street, remember the reindeer? The tea dance round the corner? I only hope we can have as much fun on Hyndland Street with our new neighbours and friends. Pop in today if you can, but failing that, I’ll see you from 15th August in our new home xx
P.s that’s me outside the shop shortly after we opened in 2011

we’re moving!

Screen Shot 2015-08-01 at 09.28.36

We have some exciting news!  I can hardly believe it when I think that Cushion & Cake have been trading on Old Dumbarton Road for over 4 years. We feel we’ve kinda outgrown the area and need to make a move to pastures new. So in August, we will be packing our crockery, tables and chairs and heading along the road to our new home on Hyndland Street.

We will still provide our specialist loose leaf teas and our fabulous homebaking while looking forward to updating our menu, installing a fancy coffee machine and offering more choice of crafts in the craft gallery.

I really hope you are as excited as we are and will continue to visit us in our new home. We will be closed for just one week from 10th August until we reopen in our new space on Saturday 15th August. I will contact you again to let you know the details of our grand reopening!

In other news… if you haven’t popped in for a while you may not know that I’m pregnant and will be taking a little time off from mid September to have a baby. However I expect to be back in the tearoom with the little one as soon as I’ve got the sleeping/feeding thing sorted! I have a great team of staff who will be looking after the tearoom on the days I’m not there so do pop in and see them.

I’d like to thank all my lovely customers from the tearoom on Old Dumbarton Road for their support over the last four years and I look forward to welcoming you to my new space on Hyndland Street.

Have you tried Strawberry Shortcake?

Tuesday, 16 June 2015

I love this cake and I bake it regularly every year when Scottish  strawberries are at their most flavourful.

If you’re not sure what strawberry shortcake is, well it is a typical American bake but is very similar to a giant British scone. What makes it so wonderful is the lashings of cream and homemade strawberry coulis, so large a slice you have to eat it with a knife and fork. We will be baking a shortcake every morning this week, but be warned, they won’t last so pop in before its gone.

i scream for ice cream!

Wednesday, 21 May 2014

Ice cream is one of my favourite foods and I love Summer when I can eat it daily. For breakfast if I like! From next week we will be stocking Cream O’Galloway ice cream. It is made in Scotland with milk from happy Scottish cows so that makes me happy to sell it in my little tearoom. I’m canvassing customers in the tearoom and on Facebook at the moment to finalise flavours. It is a tricky business especially when there are so many cakey inspired flavours. Pop over to Facebook to have your say.

how do you eat your cream tea?

Tuesday, 25 February 2014

In the tearoom we’ve always had tea. We’ve always had scones but for some reason, we’d never offered them as a classic cream tea. This is about to change. I’ve stocked up on clotted cream and jam and I’ve just eaten one for my lunch and can recommend them enormously!2014-02-25 14.22.13

The cream tea or Cornish/Devonshire as the name suggests originated in Devonshire and is traditionally a scone served with clotted cream and strawberry jam with tea and milk. There are many schools of though on how you should eat your scone but generally it is spit in half with the cream on both halves with jam on top.

2014-02-25 14.20.20

We don’t mind how you eat your scone but would encourage you to come and experiment the various methods and at £3.50, this is a super afternoon  treat.

New neighbours

Thursday, 20 February 2014

I was really excited to meet Jo a few weeks ago when she told me she was just about to open a vintage painted furniture shop just a few doors down from Cushion & Cake. This is great news. This little street needs more exciting little businesses and hopefully my customers will be interested in Jo’s new shop and vice versus.

Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 14.12.48

They opened their doors last week with lovely fresh new decor and a lots of their lovely painted furniture stock. Their style is definitely French shabby chic in style, upcycling unloved pieces of furniture and giving it a new lease of life with chalk paint that they also sell.

I popped in today to say hello and have a nosey at their work. They had lovely chest of drawers, dressing tables and little side tables in different chalky, pastel colours. I loved it.

Chatting to Jo she was telling me she intends to run furniture painting  workshops using chalk paint. I love painting furniture as you may know, I painted all the chairs for the tearoom but I have never used chalk paint. They also teach other skills such as embossing, gilding, stencils and transfer techniques which I have never tried so I’ll be first to attend when they get the workshops up and running.

2014-02-20 13.22.25Do pop in and see Jo and her son Ollie and not to forget their little bichon frise, Fifi who warmly welcomes you at the door. They’re a great addition to Old Dumbarton Road, I’m so please they’ve moved in.

Cosy Toasties

Wednesday, 12 February 2014

The Winter is dragging on… it has been particularly cold, wet and very, very grey here in Glasgow so what do you need in times like this?

A little warm toastie for lunch. What comfort food could be better? Our cheese and chutney and brie sandwiches work particularly well but you could make up your own creations. We enjoy creativity!

My New Year Upcycling Project

Monday, 27 January 2014

If you are familiar with the tearoom you will be aware of cosy corner with the comfy Parker Knoll chairs. These were donated to me by one of my customers. I love them, but the fabric was a little tired looking and needed a bit of an update.

Screen Shot 2014-01-27 at 17.56.13

So once I had set my mind to recover them myself. The search for fabric was on. I popped into Cath Kidston one day while in town and they had a super sale on fabric. I bought 2m of the sailboat fabric for £20. Super!

2014-01-22 22.10.52

I spent a couple of hours over a few evenings picking apart the seams of the chairs to use the original pieces as my pattern. It was fairly easy if you remember where to sew the pieces together! It took me a couple of tries before I assembled them properly.

Next week I popped back into Cath Kidston for more fabric. 2m was more than sufficient but not enough for two chairs. I got a different fabric this time. The second chair I completed in just about two hours. A little bit of experience goes a long way.

2014-01-22 22.09.57

So there you have it. They are not perfect but they will be fine in the tearoom and I am happy with them. They will be back in the tearoom tomorrow for you to take tea on.

January Upcycling Crafternoon

Saturday, 28 December 2013

This time every year, following Christmas when I receive lots of lovely gifts I stand back and take stock of all the things I am lucky to have. Some of the things however have perhaps lain unused or unloved, waiting for me to ‘get round to doing something with this’. January is a great time to do just that. After the Christmas rush we have a little more time, perhaps a little less money so upcycling crafting is just the ticket.

Screen Shot 2013-12-28 at 16.28.39

I’ve been thinking about what I could do with my enormous stash or fabric, 1/3 full pots of paint, bits of ribbon etc and the answer is, lets use it! Bring along something you want to breathe new life into, a picture frame, a moth eaten jumper, a glass jar collection or even tatty books and lets see what wonderful item we can make.

This session is £15 each and include materials (except the item you want to upcycle) and tea time treats. Booking is essential and can be done here

Charity Bake Stall Success

Wednesday, 11 December 2013

Thanks to the Old Dumbarton Cake Club who baked and took care of our charity bake stall at our Yuletide event on 28th November. We raised £291.90 for Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. A great achievement I’m sure you’ll agree.

Thank you Yorkhill 1
