it’s our birthday week

Friday, 1 May 2015

I can hardly believe it but Cushion & Cake turns 4 on the 7th May. We opened our doors for the first time in 2011 and lots has happened since then. In addition to the tearoom we’ve had a Christmas fayre featuring real reindeer outside the tearoom, had a tea dance not to mention various different Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day events in the tearoom.

We host hen parties and baby showers almost every week. I couldn’t have estimated how popular parties would be so we had to open Cushion & Cake too in 2013 to accommodate celebrations with afternoon tea.

Our little staff team has grown and we now have a full time member of staff, Cara, to help in the tearoom, not to forget our Saturday team member, Katy who has been working with me since we opened. She’s off to university this year but you’ll still see her every Saturday… I hope!

I want to thank all my lovely customers who have supported us over these last four years and I look forward to your continued custom in the years to come.

new oolong tea

Thursday, 19 February 2015

We’ve added another delicious tea to our tea menu, an orange blossom oolong tea. So what is oolong? Well, it is a light refreshing  Chinese tea, described as being in between a green and a black tea.. This particular variety has delicious dried orange peel throughout giving a really zesty cuppa. Pop in if you fancy giving it a try.

new toy!

Tuesday, 4 November 2014

I’ve got a new toy! A new baking tin which is very festive, very christmassy and I’m dying to start baking with it. It is a Nordic -Ware tin. A bundt tin. It is super detailed sot the cake results are going to be fabulous! I have a great gingerbread recipe which I think will work beautifully, the dark sponge with icing sugar dredged over. Ooh I’m so excited about Christmas! Keep an eye on the cake bar for the arrival of the bundt cake. If you have any suggestions of a cake flavour to bake in it then let us know.

country living fayre glasgow

Saturday, 1 November 2014

It’s that time again folks. The time when you prepare yourself, and your purse to go on a Christmas Spending Spree! The thing about this particular fayre however is that all of the exhibitors are independent businesses of artisans, designers, bakers and makers. You can be sure that everything you buy here is supporting small businesses.  Yea!

pages_homepage_slice1

I particularly like to hang around the cheese stalls hoping to sneak some samples and then there’s the artisan cider stall! I usually come away with truckle cheeses, handmade sweets, unique christmas decorations for my tree not to mention pressies for all my pals!

pages_homepage_slice2

I’ll be going along this year with some friends but if you wanted to go along yourself then you have to get over the Country Living Website and get your tickets before they sell out!

welcome autumn!

Tuesday, 30 September 2014

What a gorgeous summer we have had. I measure how great it was by how often I used my barbeque and how regularly I got to sit in my garden in the evening. Both of these activities I have to say, were very regular during the longer days.

On the barbeque, not only did I cook the usual fare but I made PIZZA on the barbecue. Yes it’s true! Apparently conventional ovens cant get hot enough to make a really great crispy pizza base. I made the pizza dough from scratch using this recipe from Good Food went ahead and cooked the whole thing on the barbie. I was using a gas barbeque but charcoal ones work fine too.

Other great things this Summer in Glasgow included the Commonwealth Games. Every day felt like a festival. The sun was shining, people were smiling and there really was an excited buzz about the place. There were so many things going on in the city alongside the sport, so even if  you aren’t particularly fond of sports, there were plenty of other cultural things going on to keep you entertained.

2014-07-12 11.12.05

Looking forward to the shorter days and cooler temperatures, I love to start baking with all the lovely spices associated with the season. On the cake bar this week using seasonal courgettes is a spiced courgette loaf with walnuts, nutmeg and lots of cinnamon. Butternut squash, sweet potato and apples feature heavily this month. To go with them apple spiced tea, a gorgeous herbal tea which turns pink on brewing. Or how about spicy chai? Surely the cosiest tea in the world!

See you soon in the tearoom?

holiday time!

Tuesday, 2 September 2014

We have had a super busy year so far and it is not time to take a little break. Unfortunately as a small business it is tricky to remain open while staff take holidays so I hope  this doesn’t not cause you too much inconvenience.

We’ll be away from Tuesday 9th September until we reopen on Thursday 18th September.

I really look forward to seeing you on my return.

Pamela

it’s time… commonwealth games

Friday, 4 July 2014

You may or may not be aware that our lovely city, Glasgow, is hosting this year’s Commonwealth Games. There is a real buzz about the city. Everyone is talking about it with excitement or a little bit of worry…

I am excited about the games but I’m a so worried about the impact it will have on the little tearoom. Our street, Old Dumbarton Road will have parking restrictions which means that people who visit the tearoom by car will not be able to park nearby during the Games. I am also a little concerned about how I will get to work myself as it looks likely that I won’t be able to drive to work either!Kelvingrove Bandstand

On the other hand there will be literally thousands of spectators in the nearby bowling green and bandstand in Kelvingrove Park who hopefully are in the mood for cakes and loose leaf tea.

Kelvingrove-Lawn-Bowls-Centre--fbe

To cope with the possible demand for cake and loose leaf tea we will be extending our opening hours. During the Games we will be open every day until 6pm.

I am hoping to find answers to my questions regarding parking etc next week otherwise you will find me in a little tent camped outside the tearoom as I haven’t found a way to get to and from work! :-)

time for a break…

Wednesday, 2 July 2014

We have had a busy wee year so far in the tearoom. Our recent tea dance event took quite a bit or organising and even though I loved every bit of it, I was planning it while still working full time in the tearoom so needless to say. I’m pretty pooped. I treated myself to Saturday off and took myself off glamping. On this trip I went to stay in a wee Summer house essentially at the bottom of a man’s garden. A  big garden you must understand. On a farm. Not a suburban garden. hat would be odd…

Next to our secluded little summer house was a duck pond and chicken coop. We couldn’t really have gotten closer to nature, comfortably that is. I thought I’d share some of my snaps with you. Of the summer house and the beautiful garden. I could’ve stayed all week…
